About Us
The Jozani Sea Turtle Sanctuary is a community initiative which belongs to local Jozani farm owners. It was initally created to promote awareness and help educate the public about sea turtle conservation but has grown into a beautiful sanctuary that homes various animal including: Hawksbill and Juvenile Green sea turtles, Giant Aldabra and Leopard Tortoises, Monitor lizards and Mallet fish used for fish-farming.

As the sea turtle population continues to decline particularly in the Indian Ocean region nearly all species of sea turtle are classified as Endangered. Killed for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation. All these exploitative activities pose a threat to the future of sea turtles in the region. At our sanctuary we are committed to stop the decline of sea turtles and work for the recovery of the species.

Another aim of this community initiative is to help local people benefit from conservation and tourism. We have three large pools which you can observe sea turtles and fish-farming side by side. We are also very pleased to have giant Aldabra tortoises, translocated here from Chunguu Island as a gift from the president of Zanzibar.

Our sanctuary is a great place to learn more about these wonderful species and gives you the rare opportunity to interact with them in nature.

The sanctuary is 35km southeast of Zanzibar Town, just off the road to Paje; opposite the entrance to Jozani-Chwaka National Park.
