JOZANI SEA TURTLE SANCTUARY
The Jozani Sea Turtle Sanctuary is a community initiative which belongs to local Jozani farm owners. The aim of this community initiative is to help local people benefit from conservation and tourism. We have three large pools which you can observe sea turtles and fish-farming side by side as well as several other animals to come and visit.

Sea Turtles
As the sea turtle population continues to decline particularly in the Indian Ocean region nearly all species of sea turtles are classified as Endangered.
Killed for their eggs, meat, skin and shells, sea turtles suffer from poaching and over-exploitation.
All these exploitative activities pose a threat to the future of sea turtles in the region. At our sanctuary we are committed to stop the decline of sea turtles and work for the recovery of the species. The Sanctuary was initally created to promote awareness and help educate the public about sea turtle conservation but has grown into a beautiful sanctuary that homes various Hawksbill and Juvenile Green sea turtles.

Tortoises
We are very pleased to announce that we are home to giant Aldabra tortoises, translocated here from Chunguu Island as a gift from the president of Zanzibar. The Aldabra Giant Tortoise (Aldabrachelys gigantea) are one of the largest tortoise species on Earth. Formerly giant tortoises were found on many Indian Ocean islands but came close to extinction due to exploitation.

Our sanctuary is a great place to learn more about these wonderful species and gives you the rare opportunity to interact with them in nature.
